The Energy Body: Details

The purpose of this post is to go over things that didn’t fit well into the previous posts and go over the interactions and connections between the body’s energy systems.

There are three energy reservoirs in the body usually called dan tiens. They’re located slightly below the sacral chakra, next to the heart chakra, and behind the third eye. Chakra connections seem to be able to pass through them without interacting. Energy can be gathered and stored in these reservoirs and used later. They do have a limited capacity so filling them without paying attention isn’t advisable. Robert Bruce asserts that filling the upper dan tiens before the lower carries psychological and physiological risks but these have failed to manifest in my experiments. He also says their volume is effectively infinite, which is false depending on the amount of energy one is working with. The dan tiens link directly to the meridian system, allowing excess energy to be preserved for periods of low intake, not unlike fat in the physical body. Unlike fat, there is no real reason not to keep as much energy with you in reserve as you can.

While in the process of writing this series I was reading a book that discusses the meridian network as the mechanism of the practices it sets out to explain. It turns out that the front channel meridian, called the functional channel, has 7 or 8 major nodes. These correspond to the same locations as the major chakras. I checked some other sources and verified that this wasn’t an anomalous author mixing systems. Those points seem to be commonly referenced in Taoist literature (at least what’s in English) and have specific names in Chinese. There seems to be an added energy node close to the navel, about where I placed the second sacral chakra in my diagram in the first post of this series. The governor channel along the spine seems to have 8 nodes as well, including what’s called the jade pillow, which is located close to where the zeal chakra is drawn. This correspondence is an interesting coincidence but I’m unsure whether it’s due to existent discussion of chakras in the west.

Kundalini energy traditionally described as a coiled snake or a furnace and associated with the goddess Kundalini, who is associated with several different goddesses depending which branch of Hinduism you ask. It’s considered a strongly feminine force in both men and women, which is supposed to derive from the divine feminine. It’s also sometimes described as the precursor to all the body’s other energies.

The energy is not directly available to most people and is usually encountered through a kundalini awakening, which is poetically described as the coiled serpent ascending the spine. That causes all kinds of psychic powers (or at least the feeling of psychic powers, since people who talk about their awakenings seem to have no idea how to actually make anything work). Accidental awakenings are associated with a lot of suffering in both physical and spiritual senses, leading some victims to be put in psychiatric institutions which of course doesn’t help them at all. Feelings of unity with the cosmos and the inherent goodness of the natural order are also common and can’t be rationally explained to others, constituting a type of gnosis. There are plenty of people who have written about their awakenings online and in books, so if you want more details about the experience you can find out firsthand.

A less commonly discussed effect of kundalini experiences, either full or partial awakenings, is a sense of superiority. In my observation kundalini causes people to see themselves as better morally and spiritually than others. I recall a couple of authors mentioning that as a pitfall on the path toward enlightenment but I can’t find where they said it to quote them. As I mentioned, an unexpected kundalini awakening can destroy one’s life. That fact is used as justification by gurus to forbid anyone to talk about it outside of their classes. This both makes it more difficult for those who aren’t given a choice about going down that path to find help or information about what’s happening to them and increases business to the gurus. I’m not sure it’s actually prevented anyone from making a mistake.

When unlocked, activated, or awakened, kundalini can be used however the person chooses. I think that the only requirement to avoiding most of the negatives from kundalini is being able to effectively channel the energy. I’ll talk more about this in my next post.

The kundalini itself, according to my observations, is a pipe that passes through the spinal column from the tailbone to the base of the skull and up through the crown of the skull. It doesn’t cross any chakras or intersect any meridians. The kundalini somehow connects to the rear point of the root chakra and the governor meridian at the tailbone, and again meets those systems at the top of the head. Usually the energy paths are isolated but energy can be consciously brought through the barriers. Energy cannot leak out of the kundalini at points other than the ends. If it does, that’s a sign of damage which only some peoples of the astral plane are able to heal.

While apparently feminine on the whole, the kundalini is supposed to be composed of 3 channels called nadis. One is feminine and lunar and called Ida. Another is masculine and solar and called Pingala. The middle one is neutral and called Sushumna. Energy supposedly descends through the side nadis to the base of the kundalini where it travels up the Sushumna. What I observe isn’t like that at all. There is a single channel with a hard bonelike exterior protecting the energy inside. It bends with the body but raising energy is harder when the path isn’t as straight. My scanning of myself and others indicates that the kundalini energy is dispersed from the crown chakra’s location through the body’s energy system at a very weak concentration. Those undergoing an awakening or who intentionally levy that energy have a higher concentration which can be measured with certain techniques that I have no idea how to describe. It’s otherwise possible to manipulate the flow to adjust one’s energetic profile.

The energy that can come from the kundalini is limited and depleting it and continuing to use it more than it replenishes will probably end badly. From personal experience, using too much results in fatigue and a general feeling of illness. It can also cause intense sexual urges, depending on how one utilizes it. Succubi are especially at risk if they aren’t careful.
